Capacitor µF - nF - pF Conversion Chart

When reading schematics, working on projects and buying capacitors, you often must convert between µF, nF and pF.

Electrolytic capacitors are usually expressed in terms of µF (microfarads). Short forms for micro farad include µF, uF, mfd, MFD, MF and UF. "µ" or "u" or "U" is shorthand for the greek letter mu which looks like a u with a tail on the left side.

Mica capacitors are usually expressed in terms of pF (micromicrofarads) (picofarads). Short forms for micromicrofarads include pF, mmfd, MMFD, MMF, uuF and PF. A pF is one-millionth of a µF.

In between a pF and a µF is a nF which is one-one thousands of a µF. Converting back and forth between µF, nF and pF can be confusing with all the decimal points. Below is a µF - nF- pF conversion chart.

To use this table, just read the values across. For example, 1µF is same 1,000nF or 1,000,000pF.
